How to make a baby shower card
It's an easy thing to make a baby shower card, with the right materials and good instructions. This is such a simple card that you could find yourself making all your homemade baby shower cards quicker than it takes to change a diaper!
As in all things, preparation for this baby shower card idea is all and it’s quicker to follow the conveyor-belt approach. That means completing each stage on all your cards at one go, rather than making one at a time.
If you know the sex of your baby can personalize your card, or keep it to traditional lemon or white.
This little card makes a Stork Baby Sling. The idea is just as appropriate for a handmade christening card with a few small adjustments. You'll be able to get most of the materials you need from Dick Blick , Paper.com or your local stores.
What you’ll need:
Blue – or pink card stock or pre-formed cards
Blue or pink or white muslin
Old shirt and Blue or pink dye or bought cotton sheeting
Small gold safety pin
Air drying clay
Tissue paper
PVA glue and paintbrush
Polystyrene block and blunt needle
1. Dye an old shirt following manufacturer’s recommendations to your chosen color.2. Cut up your card stock to the size you want or use bought cards
3. Crumple some tissue paper in your hand
4. Paste PVA glue onto the front of your card and push on your tissue paper into a pleasing arrangement. Leave to dry
5. Cut a small diamond shape of muslin (whatever color will go with your card base) to fit the front of your card. You may need to make a few ‘trials’ to get the right size
6. Fray about 5/6 strands on each of the four sides
7. Glue to the front
8. Play around with the size of your base square for your baby’s ‘stork sling’: cut a square of scrap paper and place as a diamond on the table. Fold down the right and left corner to the center. Fold up the bottom right and left corner to the centre.
9. Bring the top and bottom point together to make the sling. Adjust the size to suit then cut the number of pieces you need from your dyed shirt material or bought cotton fabric.
10. Place your card on a polystyrene block and pencil in two pricking marks for where you’ll pin on the sling. Prick these two holes with a bodkin or blunt needle and carefully push through the holes from the front. Gather the top of the sling with a gold safety pin, and stick it through the pierced holes. Repeat on each card
11. Practice rolling the right size of baby’s head from air drying clay. Place it in the sling for size and adjust as necessary. Make up the number you need and leave to dry
12. Assemble all the parts together and add your computer-generated invite to the inside.
13. Sign and deliver or post your card
Take it step-by-step and you can make a baby shower card in two shakes of a lamb’s tail!
