Know your standard card stock sizes
Choosing your card stock is an easy matter once you know what you're looking for. There are a number of standard sizes which can easily be trimmed to your personal size preference with a craft knife and cutting mat. A bit of basic knowledge about blank card stock will make your task far easier.
- A4 sheets of card measure 210mm x 297 (8.1/4" x 11.3/4"). This will fit a C4 envelope
- A sheet of A4 that is either cut or folded in half becomes A5 148mm x 210mm (5 7/8" x 8 ¼") , which fits a C5 envelope
- A piece of A5 cut/or folded in half become A6 105mm x 148mm (4 1/8" x 5 7/8") and fits C6 envelope.
- Before cutting your selection of card make sure that you have the correct size envelope. It's easy to make an envelope if you haven't got one. Simply open out a standard envelope to get the shape and adjust the sizing to fit your card size. Cutting with a craft knife will give you sharp, clean edges - as long as you remember to change the blades frequently,
- Remember health and safety issues! Always retract your blade after use, dispose of used blades carefully and using a cutting mat and a metal ruler with a finger guard to protect your table and yourself.
- Store all your equipment carefully for safety, out of harm's way.
- Before you begin any card project make sure that you have the materials to make either an envelope or a card ‘box’. There’s nothing more frustrating that finding no envelope available later. Deciding on your card size should go hand-in-hand with your envelope size and the materials you have available.
- The majority of pre-formed cards are A6 size and whilst they are readily available they do limit the breadth of your creativity! Once size definitely doesn’t fit all!
