How to word your Sympathy Card message

When a loved one or a friend passes on it can often be difficult to think of . Breaking things down into separate parts can make it easier to plan your words. then becomes so much easier.

1. Your message.  Do you want to brief and mention that you are thinking of them, or do you want to add something more flowing and personal?  Thinking about this before you begin to write will make the flow easier.

If you want to keep things simple you could say:

  • My (or our) thoughts and prayers are with youï‚·
  • We're sharing your sorrow

Or of course the standard style of wording:

  • With heartfelt condolences
  • With deepest sympathy
  • You are in our thoughts and prayers
  • In loving memory
  • Fondest remembrances

All of the above are common messages in Sympathy Cards and if you use one of these you won’t go wrong.

If you want to make things more personal, you could use the following as an example:

  • May the peace which comes from the memories of love shared comfort you now and in the days ahead.

Many people use verses from poems which have been well loved and spoken in their lifetimes.  Others favor verses from hymns.

Whatever you use, make it personal if you can to mark the influence that the departed one had on you. If you know however that traditional tribute sayings will upset their relatives then you may want to re-think the style of message that you add to your card.
